Workshop: What is Quality Child Care?

During this session, participants will learn about Capital Quality, the District’s quality rating and improvement system for licensed child care facilities. Participants will be provided with an overview of the key elements of a high-quality child development center and home to assist them in making informed choices. They will also explore strategies for selecting quality care and receive information on the Capital Quality facility participation process.

Workshop: Strength-based Parenting

Strength-based parenting helps children recognize and make the most of their talents and skills. In this workshop, the facilitator will share strategies for building on the strengths of children to maximally support their development.

Baby Signs

Baby sign language is manual signing that allows infants and toddlers to communicate about emotions, desires and objects before they are able to develop spoken language. Using the Baby Signs curriculum, families will learn strategies and techniques to communicate with infants and toddlers using sign language.

Listening Lab: Protections Against Discrimination in the District

This listening lab is focused on protections against discrimination in the District. It will open with welcoming remarks by OHR’s Interim Director, Hnin Khaing; and then a brief presentation on who and what OHR is by Ajan Brown, the community engagement specialist. Following this, those attending will be split into smaller groups with an OHR facilitator. During this time, individuals are encouraged to speak about the topic and express their opinions. OHR will be taking notes. These opinions are confidential, and people will remain anonymous unless requested. Light refreshments will be provided.

Promoting Social and Emotional Development

In this session, families will explore ways to strengthen the social-emotional skills of their young children at home. Families will have an opportunity to share their experiences and strategies. Facilitators will offer information about evidence-based approaches and practices that may prove helpful in social-emotional learning and growth.

Music Monday

Join DC CCC for an evening of fun as they kick off the Week of the Young Child event series. Spend an hour singing call and response songs with Mr. Michael’s Monday Music Medley.

Tasty Tuesday

Join DC CCC for an exciting and interactive workshop that explores how different cultures use the sweet potato. The health benefits of this commonly used root vegetable will also be explored.

Work Together Wednesday

This interactive workshop will demonstrate ways to use movement, music and rhythm to teach crucial pre-reading, early math and essential social-emotional skills.

Artsy Thursday

During Artsy Thursday, families will learn how to craft easy to make sock puppets. Families are encouraged to register in advance to receive supplies for this event.

Family Friday

Take an imaginary carpet ride through the clouds with sight and sound! Families are invited to join DC CCC for this interactive session that explores ways to promote creativity and storytelling at home. This session is offered in both English and Spanish.
