Science Matters
During this session, participants will have an opportunity to learn various activities that can be done at home that promote science and inquiry in young children. Hosted in Spanish and English, the facilitators will demonstrate ways to encourage science learning and share information on science education resources available at little to no cost.
Knots and Knuckles: Developing Fine Motor Skills in Young Children
During this session, participants will learn about fine motor skill development in early childhood. The facilitator will introduce a host of hands-on activities for families that support muscle development and fine motor skills in children ages birth to 5.
Kindergarten Readiness
The transition from preschool to kindergarten presents many changes for young children. This workshop is designed to assist families as they approach this transition. Facilitators will provide tools and encourage dialogue that promotes readiness for kindergarten.
What’s Your Child’s Love Language?
During this workshop, a facilitator will introduce a host of hands-on activities designed to explore the various ways young children communicate. Participants will learn new and interesting ways of communicating with babies, toddlers and preschool-aged children.
Math Counts: Encouraging Numeracy Development at Home
During this workshop, participants will learn various activities that can be done at home to support numeracy development in young children. Facilitators will demonstrate practical ways to promote number sense in children from birth to preschool.
Advocating for Your Child
During this workshop, participants will learn about policies that impact early childhood programs in the District. Participants will also learn about ways to navigate early childhood systems and advocate for their young children.
What is Quality Child Care?
During this session, participants will learn about Capital Quality, the District’s quality rating and improvement system. Participants will be provided with an overview of the key elements of a high-quality child development center and home, strategies to select quality care and information on the Capital Quality facility participation process.
Understanding Developmental Stages from Birth to 5
During this session, participants will learn information about the developmental stages of young children. This information will help foster families’ understanding of what to expect from their child’s growth and abilities and provide early alerts if additional support is needed.
Book Nook: Using Books at Home to Support Literacy and Language Development
During this session, participants will explore literacy and language development in early childhood. Participants will learn new approaches to increasing children’s interest in reading while strengthening language skills. This session will focus on birth to preschool-aged children.
